Beaufort Old Homes & Gardens Tour

Photo of a little girl in Victorian dress enjoying front portch rocker as she greets guests to the Josiah Bell House. The Beaufort Historic Site is readying itself for the 45th Annual Beaufort Old Homes & Gardens Tour and Antiques Show and Sale, June 24-26. Though the historic site hosts the event and proceeds benefit the organization’s historic preservation and education programs, the entire community gets involved with townspeople dressing up in period costume and children selling lemonade from homemade stands throughout the historic district.

The event attracts thousands of visitors and residents every year who tour historic homes, churches, and meeting halls and stroll through amazing gardens. But the tour itself is not the only draw for this event. The authentically restored houses and civic buildings of the Beaufort Historic Site will be open and the grounds of the Site will be alive with activity as volunteers recreate a militia encampment, artisans demonstrate coastal Carolina decoy carving, and musicians play colonial style music for passers-by.

Narrated bus tours of the town aboard a vintage English double-decker bus will be offered four times daily for an additional fee of $6 for adults and $4 for children.

The anachronisms on the grounds of the Historic Site will be the Parker 1801 center console boat and the 2005 XC70 Volvo Cross Country wagon that Morehead Marine/Parker Marine Enterprises and Coastal Carolina Volvo of New Bern, respectively, have generously donated to the BHA. The boat and car will be used in a silent auction to raise funds for the organization. Make an offer on these prizes in the Safrit Historical Center and get a great boat and/or car while supporting a worthy cause.

The highlight of this annual tour is, of course, the homes and gardens that have been graciously opened for public view. Each of the 12 private homes on the tour has a distinct personality from classic architecture and beautiful antiques to whimsical adaptations of tradition. This year’s houses include: the Sloo House, c1768, the Duncan House, c1790, the WA Pierce House, c1901, the Clawson House, c1904, the home of John AC Cartner, the WVB Potter House, c1903, the home of Joe & Susan Johnson, the home of Suzy Haupt, the Gibble House, c1772, the home of Lester & Carole Sadler, the home of Danny & Hilda Wilson, and the home of Worth & Ann Harris. Private gardens on display this year will be: the Delamar Inn garden, The Cedars garden, the garden of George & Carroll Page, the garden of Rick & Marcie Carroll, the Martha’s Collections garden, the Tierra Fina garden, the Pecan Tree Inn garden, the Ann Street Inn garden, and the garden of Tom & Peg Midyette.

The Carteret Chorale, under the direction of Laurence Stith, will give a concert on Thursday, June 23 that will commence the weekend’s activities. Beginning at 8 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 209 Ann Street in Beaufort, special recognition is extended to the army of volunteers who participate in orchestrating the busy weekend. The evening also honors Frank and Fran Rock, who have been selected as the 2005 Honorary Chairpersons. The free concert is open to the public with a reception following in the Parish Hall.

An Antique Car Show will be held in the BB&T parking lot on Saturday. Hosted by the Morehead City Antique Car Club, a collection of vintage cars will fascinate serious collectors and curious onlookers alike.

Held in conjunction with the Old Homes & Gardens Tour is the Antiques Show and Sale at the Crystal Coast Civic Center in Morehead City. The show runs Friday, June 24 from 3 to 8 pm; Saturday, June 25 from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, June 26 from 11 am to 4 pm.

Originally held in Beaufort, the show has outgrown any venue available there and was moved to the larger Civic Center. It now hosts over 40 local and regional antique dealers who offer a variety of antiques and collectibles, silver, jewelry, linens, crystal, paintings, furniture, dolls and more. The variety is endless with items priced for every budget.
The Gourmet Tea Room will be open during the Antiques Show and Sale and will offer specialty sandwiches, beverages and desserts provided by area restaurants.

Ticket prices for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour and Antiques Show and Sale combination are $18 in advance, $22 the days of the events. Tickets may also be purchased separately. A ticket for the Old Homes & Gardens Tour is $16 in advance and $20 at the door. The Antiques Show and Sale tickets are $5, good for all three days.
