Coastal Carolina Christmas Walk
The Beaufort Historical Association will hold its annual
Coastal Carolina Christmas Walk on Saturday, December 10
from 2:00 to 4:30 pm. This free, self-guided walking
tour is a great way to see the buildings of the Beaufort
Historic Site, Beaufort's charming bed & breakfasts
inns, and local historic churches - all decorated for
the season.
The tour will begin at the Beaufort Historic Site on the
100 block of Turner Street. The historic buildings of
the Site will be open and decorated in appropriate
period fashion. Visit the Historic Site to see how
people long ago would have prepared for Christmas. Music
has always been an important part of Christmas
celebrations. Harpists will entertain at 2- 3:00 pm from
the parlor of the Josiah Bell House followed by Simple
Gifts from 3-4:00 pm. The Carteret Open Band will
provide old-fashioned seasonal music around the Historic
Site throughout the tour.
Nine Beaufort bed and breakfasts inns as well as
Beaufort Realty's Beaufort House Condominium are on the
tour and decorated with their own holiday flare. Each
one welcomes you to enjoy a glimpse of their lodgings
and some light refreshments. The inns include old
favorites: the Ann St. Inn, Beaufort Inn, Cousin
Martha's, Delamar Inn, Inlet Inn, Langdon House, and
Pecan Tree Inn. Two new additions to the tour this year
are the Anchorage House, and The Red Dog Inn. The
Anchorage House is currently working on opening a bakery
behind the inn and will be serving some of their
delicious baked goods during the tour.
Historic Ann Street Churches will also be participating
in the Christmas Walk. Both St. Paul's Episcopal Church
and the Ann Street Methodist Church will be open and
decorated for the tour. St. Paul's Episcopal Church will
hold an Art in Advent exhibit in the Parish Hall. The
Quilt Guild will be showing their quilts as well as
other handmade pieces of artwork. Refreshments will be
provided. Ann Street Methodist Church will be hosting
musical interludes throughout the evening including
musical performances by Julie Schilens, Jessie Schilens,
Cassie Stallings, Darla Vick, Brendan McCreary, and
Sandy Lockwood. In addition, the Poet Laureate of
Carteret County, Carol Bessent Hayman, will be giving a
special poetry reading at 3:00 pm.
You may choose to start the Christmas Walk by taking a
lively narrated tour of Beaufort's historic district
aboard the BHA's vintage English double-decker bus. At
1:30 pm a special tour throughout the Historic District
will introduce you to the history and legends of
Beaufort. While the Christmas Walk is free, the bus tour
costs $6 for adults and $4 for children.
Maps of the tour and refreshments will be available at
the Safrit Historical Center, located at 130 Turner
Street. All locations are within easy walking distance.
At the Welcome Center, Raffle Tickets will be available
for chances to win overnight stays at bed & breakfasts
inns as well as gift certificates and prizes from fine
local merchants. The Raffle Drawing will be held at 4:30
pm, after the Christmas Walk. Tickets are $5 each or 3
for $12 and 5 for $20. Even if you name is not called
during the Raffle Drawing, everyone is a winner. Each
Raffle ticket is good for $5 off lunch or dinner at
Clawson's 1905 Pub & Restaurant through March 2006. All
proceeds from the Coastal Carolina Christmas Raffle help
support the restoration and educational projects at the
Beaufort Historical Association, a private, non-profit
organization.
