The Beaufort Historic Site
includes several historic buildings to choose from to
create a customized Buildings Tour.
Leffers Cottage: A primitive home built by a
Beaufort schoolmaster in 1778. See how his family would
have lived, especially interesting are artifacts
relating to daily household chores of cooking, spinning,
sewing and candle making.
Old Jail:
Built with brick walls 28 inches thick, this jail was
constructed in 1829 and served as the county jail until
1954. Students observe that the jailer lived in the same
building as the prisoners and hear stories about crime
and punishment in early Beaufort.
Apothecary Shop: This shop was built in 1859 and has
a small doctor’s office in the back room and an
apothecary in the front room. It was used by a local
doctor until 1936. Equipped with medical instruments,
books, hundreds of pharmaceutical artifacts, and even
live leeches, it illustrates early medical practices.
County
Courthouse of 1796: This award winning and newly
restored one-room courthouse of 1796 captivates the
imagination as it depicts the simplicity of the early
legal system. There is a separate
Courthouse Drama program available for
older students.
Schoolmaster’s Cottage: See the one-room house
where Beaufort’s schoolmaster, Mr. Leffers, lived.
Students see the tools colonial teachers and students
would have used.
Colonial and Victorian Games: Students have the
opportunity to actually experience the games played by
children long ago. Some of these include Game of Graces,
Quoits, Ring Taw, hoops, stilts and many more.
Old Burying Ground:
Knowledgeable docents offer tours appropriate for
students through this special cemetery listed on the
National Register of Historic Places.
Bus Tour: Ride aboard the
vintage English Double-Decker Bus through Beaufort’s
Historic neighborhoods. A narrator recounts the town’s
history and folklore. Every student has the opportunity
to ride on the second level with a stop mid-way through
the tour.
