The BHA will start the Living History Program series for 2012 with a presentation celebrating Black History. The program takes place March 10th at 2:00 pm in the 1796 Courthouse located on the grounds of the Beaufort Historic site on Turner Street.

This year members of the BHA Education Committee will focus on Pierre and Annie Henry.  Pierre was a “free born” African-American, while Annie was born into slavery and became a freed slave later in life.  Beaufort during the Civil War was second only to New Bern in the population of freed blacks.  Pierre and Annie became leaders in the education of emancipated slaves and their children.

Pierre was one of the first trustees of the Washburn Seminary established for the purpose of educating freed slaves in academics, the Christian religion and lifetime skills leading to their positive assimilation into the local community.

The living history series will continue throughout the summer months with colonial and Victorian craft workshops for adults and children. Check back for dates and times!

Pierre Henry & Annie Henry, whose gravesite in the Old Burying Ground (below), are especially important to the history of Beaufort as we commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Civil War.
